On the public radio program, Fresh Air, Terry Gross interviewed Uma Thurman today. (Audio will be available here later this afternoon.)
Uma said that portraying a martial arts expert in Kill Bill! and doing stunts and swordplay was not what she naturally gravitates to, which is work that lets her talk and EMOTE. See? The hammy vibe that crosswords keep giving this word is not necessarily reflective of the general sense of the word outside of crosswords. I really don't think Uma meant she enjoys overacting and amping up the emotions to a super-broad level. Please! Crossword constructors and editors! Take the word emote in some new directions! Abandon the old ham-it-up habit!
